AH 320 Athletic Injury/Illness Assessment- Research Topic Article Review & Oral Presentation

This is a multiple part assignment. Name

This project is designed for you to develop your research skills in finding information related to a topic of your interest within the course parameters. All readings must come from complete articles from professional journals. Brief summaries, abstracts, Internet reviews, World Wide Web Pages will not be accepted. You should select five or more (you may want to do several) professional journal articles on a specific evaluation topic related to the material as indicated by the syllabus for this course. All five (or more) articles should be related to the same particular topic. Each set of readings should be reviewed and typed in the format described below. The readings and summaries will be due at 8:50 A.M. on February 11, 2002.

Your should be ready to orally present your research topic on February 18, 2002. Every report will not be done on this date but everyone should be ready at any time on or after this date. You are expected to integrate the information from all of your articles into a very informative, interesting, and relevant presentation, not simply report on the articles. You may use any form of presentation that you desire, but audiovisual or multimedia presentations (including PowerPoint, overheads, 35 mm slides, posters, drawings, charts, graphs, handouts, video) are encouraged. You will be allowed 20 minutes for your presentation (+ or – 5 minutes). Articles may be obtained from the Library and / or the Internet or other professional journals. Several links are available from the UWA Athletic Training & Sports Medicine Center home page. Do not ask for articles from my office. Your are encouraged to utilize the Inter-Library Loan system, the University of Alabama Health Sciences Library (at DCH), the University of Alabama Main Library, the Bryant Center Sports Medicine Library (in-house use only, closed to check out materials) or any other libraries.

  1. Your grade will be based upon 20 points per article for a total of 100 points possible. For each article, type on a separate page of three or more paragraphs, one detailing the contents of the article, one regarding your critical impression of the article, and one regarding how you can practically apply the material to your setting. Include complete bibliographical information at the top of the page. Each article should have a separate typed summary page with the following information in the order listed below:
  1. Complete bibliographical information
Details of article content should include
    1. Reference
    2. Number in Group Studied (if applicable)
    3. Purpose of Research Study (if a research study)
    4. Statement of Methods
    5. Grant Funding?
    6. Summary of Results
    7. Statement of Conclusions
  1. Critical impression of the article
  2. Practical application to your setting
  3. A complete photocopy of the article on 8 ½ x 11 paper

EXAMPLE:

Baker B: Ultrasound versus hydrocollator packs in treating adhesive capsulitis. Athletic Training 11:500-505, 1989.

Dr. Baker studied 22 adhesive capsulitis patients, age 40-60, to find out if there was any significant difference between their results in using ultrasound versus hydrocollator packs to assist in increasing range of motion of the glenohumeral joint. Each patient in the study was treated with 10 minutes of ultrasound (n=10) or 15 minutes of hydrocollator pack (n=12) depending upon group assignment. Pre-treatment range of motion measurements regarding passive adduction, flexion, and external rotation (with the glenohumeral joint at 90 degrees abduction) were taken for each patient immediately prior to treatment and immediately post treatment. Being funded by the Chattanooga Corporation, this researcher used an Analysis of Variance to compare the statistics from the range of motion differences pre-treatment and post-treatment. Dr. Baker did find that there was a significant difference in the results with the ultrasound group achieving the greatest increase in the range of motion. From this research, he concluded that ultrasound may be more be more effective than hydrocollator packs in obtaining a range of motion improvement in patients with glenohumeral adhesive capsulitis.

I thought the article was well written, although I was a little unclear as to the exact position of the arm relative to the shoulder when collecting the measurements, particularly as to how the scapula movement was controlled to prevent confounding measurements. I felt this aspect should have been more detailed or perhaps explained through an illustration.

When dealing with patients suffering from adhesive capsulitis of the glenohumeral joint, I would now be more inclined to treat them with ultrasound prior to stretching and range of motion work as opposed to hot hydrocollator packs. I might also experiment with ultrasound when dealing with adhesive capsulitis and adhesions in other joints of the body.

Type a one-page summary that ties the major points of all five (or more) articles together to address the major points of your research. You may utilize additional references to further your understanding of the material in your articles. There are no limitations placed upon these references. If you use additional references, you must correctly list them on your additional reference page.

Type a title page with your name & student number, name of professor, course number, course name, date.

Everything should be stapled (in the following order) with one staple placed horizontally within ¼ inch of the top left paper edge.

  1. Title Page
  2. One page summary of all articles
  3. Additional reference page (if necessary)
  4. Summary of Article 1
  5. Photocopy of Article 1
  6. Summary of Article 2
  7. Photocopy of Article 2
  8. Summary of Article 3
  9. Photocopy of Article 3
  10. Summary of Article 4
  11. Photocopy of Article 4
  12. Summary of Article 5
  13. Photocopy of Article 5

  1. Oral presentation. You will receive a separate grade of 50 points possible for your oral presentation. Your oral presentation grade will be based upon the following factors: Length of presentation (20 minutes + or – 5), quality of oral presentation (eye contact, voice, clarity, professional appearance & demeanor), quantity of material presented, quality of material presented and relation to course objectives (evaluation & assessment of athletic injuries), audiovisual materials (quality and relation to topic), ability to answer relevant questions. Your articles and reviews will be returned to you for your use, if desired, during the presentation, but they must be returned to me immediately afterwards for my permanent records. If your articles are of the quality that they should be, I suggest you keep a copy for your professional library.
