The NATA
Foundation
2010
Distinguished
Scholar
presentations
will be
held
Wednesday,
June 23,
4 to 6
pm at
the
Philadelphia
Convention
Center.
This
event
will
feature
presentations
from
representatives
of ACSM,
AMSSM
and
AOSSM
and
two
excellent
researchers
will be
honored
with
the
Foundation
Research
Awards.
The
National
Athletic
Trainers’
Association
Research
&
Education
Foundation’s
(NATA
Foundation)
Medal
for
Distinguished
Athletic
Training
Research
is a
lifetime
achievement
award.
It
recognizes
an
established
researcher
who has
had held
a
doctoral
degree
for a
minimum
of ten
(10)
years.
Medal
winners
must
have
sustained
a
prolific
body of
work
that has
contributed
to
research
in the
field of
athletic
training
and
health
care of
the
physically
active.
This
year
Thomas
Weidner,
PhD, ATC,
FNATA
will be
awarded
the
Medal
for
Distinguished
Athletic
Training
Research by the NATA
Foundation.
Erik
Wikstrom,
PhD, ATC
has been
awarded
the
National
Athletic
Trainers’
Association
Research
&
Education
Foundation’s Doctoral
Dissertation
Award in
Honor of
David H.
Perrin,
PhD, ATC.
The
Doctoral
Dissertation
Award
recognizes
outstanding
doctoral
student
research,
while
supporting
and
encouraging
research
through
the NATA
Foundation.
To be
considered
for this
award,
the
nominee
must
have
received
a
doctoral
degree
within
the past
three
years.
He/she
must be
the
principal
author
of a
published
(or
accepted
for
publication)
manuscript
that
originates
from
his/her
dissertation
research
and a
current
NATA
member
and
certified
athletic
trainer
in good
standing.
Weidner
who will
receive
a
specially
designed
medal
and a
$5,000
cash
award,
will
present
“Common
Colds
and
Students:
Science
to
Educational
Research.” Wikstrom
will be
recognized
for his
outstanding
doctoral
dissertation,
“Structural
and
Functional
Adaptations
of Ankle
Stability
Do Not
Affect
Symptomatic
Response
and
Clinical
Outcome.”
Winners
of the
Journal
of
Athletic
Training
awards
and the
Free
Communications
Awards
will
also be
recognized.

The NATA
Foundation
will
award 57
scholarships
at the
NATA
Annual
Meeting
in
Philadelphia
for the
2009-2010
academic
year.
From
these 57
scholarships,
41 are
entry
level,
10 are
masters
and six
are
doctoral
recipients.
The
recipients
will be
recognized
at the
William
E.
"Pinky"
Newell
Student
Leadership
Breakfast
at
8 A.M.
Friday,
June 25
at the
Marriott
Hotel,
Salons
A-F
in
Philadelphia,
PA.
Non-certified
student
attendees
receive
complimentary
admission
to the
event.
Other
guests
will be
charged
a $10
registration
fee.
Preregistration
is
required
and is
available
on the
Annual
Meeting
registration
form.
This
event
will
also
include
a
keynote
address,
as well
as
recognition
of the
Deloss
Brubaker
Awards
for
Student
Writing,
the
Bobby
Gunn
Student
Leadership
Award
and the
Athletic
Training
Student
Challenge
Award.

For the
athletic
trainer
serving
hundreds
of
patients
a day,
having
solid

that is
quickly
accessible
is
critical.
As part
of our
mission
to
support
research
and
education
in the
profession,
the NATA
Foundation
is
making
an
effort
to
provide
this
valuable
resource
to
athletic
trainers.

On April
15, the
NATA
Foundation
produced
its
first
Building
Blocks
of
Clinical
Practice
titled
“Fungal
Infections
of the
Skin.”
This
document,
which is
available
electronically
through
the
Foundation
Web
site, is
a
one-page
flier
with
definitions,
causes,
symptoms
and
treatments
of
fungal
infections.
It is
the
first in
the
series,
with
other
Building
Blocks
scheduled
for
production
every
other
month.
Feel
free to
print
out
these
documents…or
forward
the link
to
parents,
athletes,
coaches
or
anyone
else who
might
benefit
from the
information.

conjunction

Annual

receive
Lifetime
Contribution
Award |

Ronnie
Barnes,
ATC,
has been
selected
by the
National
Athletic
Trainers’
Association
Research
&
Education
Foundation’s
(NATA
Foundation)
as the
2010
Lifetime
Contribution
Award
Recipient.
Mr.
Barnes,
head
athletic
trainer
for the
New York
Giants,
has a
long
history
of
service
to the
athletic
training
profession.
A member
of the
National
Athletic
Trainers’
Association
(NATA)
Hall of
Fame,
Mr.
Barnes
is a
former
president
of the
NATA
Foundation
and a
former
board
member
of the
organization.
The
Lifetime
Contribution
Award is
given in
recognition
of
exemplary
contributions
by an
individual
or a
group
who has
provided
significant
advancement
or
financial
growth
to the
NATA
Foundation
over a

Bair,
MEd, ATC,
has been
selected
by the
National
Athletic
Trainers’
Association
Research
&
Education
Foundation’s

Foundation)
as the
2010
Volunteer
Service
Award
Recipient.
Mr.
Bair,
head
athletic
trainer
at
Overbrook
Senior
High
School
in Pine
Hill,
NJ, has
a long
history
of
service
to the
athletic
training
profession.
In
addition
to his
work as
an NATA
Foundation
Board
member,
he has
also
held
positions
on the
National
Athletic
Trainers’
Association
(NATA)
Board of
Directors,
the NATA
Foundation
Board of
Directors,
and the
NATA
Secondary
School
Committee,
as well
as held
many
other
committee
assignments
with in
the
profession.
The
Volunteer
Service
Award is
given to
a
current
NATA
Foundation
board or
committee
member
who has
provided
significant
advancement
or
financial
growth
to the
organization.
Mr. Bair
will
receive
this
award at

Foundation

held its
April conference
call
on 4/29/10
at 10:00
A.M..
Below
are some
highlights
of the
actions
taken.
Administrative
Business
The
Board
began
the call
by
approving
the
minutes
from the
February
meeting.
Staff
updated
the
Board on
the
status
of the
2009
audit,
which
was
still in
process
at the
time of
the
Board
call.
The
Finance
Committee
was
updated
on the
process
during
its
April 27
call and
had
already
scheduled
a call
for May
to
review
year-to-date
information.
Development
Position
Update
Heather
Franklin
joined
the NATA
Foundation
staff
team on
May 3 as
the
development
manager.
Heather
will be
responsible
for
individual
fundraising
programs
as well
as other
special
projects.
There
have
been
several
staff
changes
at the
national
office.
The
Board
asked
Ms.
Welch to
provide
an
updated
list of
staff
responsibilities
during
the June
meeting.
Website
Update
The
website
redesign
should
be
available
to
launch
at the
NATA
Annual
Meeting
in
Philadelphia.
Staff
was
asked to
review
the
current
site to
make
sure all
information
is
up-to-date
and
relevant.
