NATA Research & Education Foundation President, Mike Sitler, EdD, ATC, reported to the NATA Convention attendees on the progress of the Foundation over the past year.  Access the full report on the State of the Foundation by clicking HERE.

 
   

Foundation Activities well attended at the 2007 NATA Annual Meeting

^

 

Over 4,800 NATA Annual Meeting attendees participated in the Special Events sponsored by the Foundation.  For the Foundation Golf Classic at Industry Hills Golf Club, 123 attendees participated; while 124 members participated in the Foundation Fun Run near the Anaheim Convention Center.  Click HERE to see the Fun Run resultsA record 4,609 members turned out for NATA Foundation Night to see the Los Angeles Angels take on the Kansas City Royals at Angel Stadium in Anaheim.

 
   

Funding for 13 Grants Approved

At the June 25, 2007 Board of Directors Meeting, the Foundation Board approved a total of $217,567.47 funding for one General Grant ($197,197.00), six Doctoral Research Grants ($14,615.47), and six Osternig Master's Research Grants ($5,755.00). In addition to the new grants approved, funding was continued for one previously approved multiple year General Grant ($43,550.00) and one previously approved multiple year Post-Doctoral Fellowship ($30,377.00).  Click HERE to see the full listing of the grants, recipients, institution, title, and amounts:

   

77 Scholarships Awarded in Anaheim

2007 Foundation Scholarship RecipientsThirty-two of the 77 scholarship recipients were present to be recognized at the William E. Winners Named from Successful Free Communications Program

The Foundation Free Communications Program for 2007 received a total of 378 submissions of which 254 were accepted.  Oral presentations totaled 132 and 122 Poster Presentations were provided.  Free Communications Award Recipients are as follows:

BU/SHU Challenge

The NATA Research & Education Foundation benefited from an energized group of athletic training student organizations that participated in the BU/SHU Challenge this year.
Boston University Society of Athletic Training took home top honors for the second consecutive year, but the real winner was the Foundation: the Challenge debuted last year with six clubs expressing interest; this year, 14 student organizations raised thousands of dollars for the Foundation.

GRANT INFORMATION SUMMARY
Single Kidney and Sports Participation

PRACTICAL SIGNIFICANCE
The purpose of this study is to review the National Athletic Trainer’s Association
(NATA) injury surveillance program database for information regarding kidney injury during high school varsity sports participation.  This information will be published to assist physicians, families and athletes in making evidence-based decisions regarding the participation of children and adolescents with single, normal kidneys in contact/collision sports.

District VI Director Brian Conway receives Foundation Volunteer of the Year Award

^

 

Our congratulations and appreciation go to Brian E. Conway, ATC, Director of the Ben Hogan Sports Therapy Institute in Fort Worth, TX for receiving the 2007 NATA Foundation Volunteer of the Year Award.  Conway has been a driving force in the District VI Sports Memorabilia Auction to benefit the Foundation.  He is currently in his second year as District VI Director on the NATA Board of Directors.

The Foundation requests nominations for the following awards for 2008:

  • Medal for Distinguished Athletic Training Research;

  • New Investigator Award;

  • Doctoral Dissertation Award.

A Look at the NATA Foundation Goals

^

 

Beginning with the March issue and continuing for the next four issues, we are focusing on the Goals and Strategies of the NATA Research & Education Foundation.   Each of these six Goals is equally important to fulfilling the mission of this organization.  This issue lists the second of the six Goals listed in no particular order of relative importance.  In subsequent issues, we will highlight each goal, one goal per issue.

GOALS AND STRATEGIES

  1. Encourage research among athletic trainers who can contribute to the athletic training knowledge base.

    Strategies:

    • Build the research culture within the athletic training profession
    • Provide post-graduate fellowships for certified athletic trainers to conduct research and to support a Foundation scholar-in-residence program
    • Recognize and encourage the research efforts of athletic training students by awarding outstanding research awards based on NATA Foundation Free Communications program abstracts and presentations
    • Provide awards and recognition for outstanding athletic training researchers
 

Recent Foundation Board Actions

Your NATA Research Foundation Board held its annual meeting June 25th in Anaheim, CA.  Below are some highlights of the actions taken on this date:
  1. Approved the minutes for the 4/23/07 conference call as presented.
  2. Approved appointments to the NATA Fellows Program Committee as recommended (pending program approval by the NATA Board.  NOTE: The NATA Board approved the NATA Fellows Program on June 30th as recommended by the NATA Foundation Board.  The goal is to have the application form, etc. available online sometime late summer 2007.  It is anticipated that the first class of inductees will be recognized at the 2008 Annual meeting in St. Louis.
  3. Approved establishment of Research Grant Endowment Options for Masters Grants and Doctoral Grants as recommended NOTE: The board tabled the recommendation for establishment of Research Grant Endowment Options for General Grants pending edits to the recommendation.
  4. Approved an unbudgeted expenditure of $5,755.00 for Master’s Research Grants as recommended.
  5. Approved an unbudgeted expenditure of $14,615.47 for Doctoral Research Grants as recommended.
  6. Approved an unbudgeted expenditure of $197,197.00 for General Research Grants as recommended.
  7. Approved re-appointment of 1 current Research Committee Member to a second term as recommended.
  8. Approved the Public Relations Strategic Plan as presented.
