Foundation Welcomes New Crew to Board

It’s a brand-new lineup for the NATA Research and Education Foundation after electing several new board members and moving a few current members to different positions.  At the Annual Meeting in June, seven new Foundation board members took office, including a new president, vice president and treasurer.

Mark HoffmanMark Hoffman, PhD, ATC, has been elected president of the Foundation board until 2010.Hoffman is an associate professor of exercise and sports science at Oregon State University and has served on the Foundation board since 2004. “My number one priority as president is to make sure we have a Board of Directors focused on the long term health of the Foundation so we can continue to support development of the profession through the numerous programs we offer,” Hoffman said.

Charlie Redmond, MS, MEd, ATC, PT, was chosen to fill the role of Foundation vice president until 2010. Redmond is an associate professor of physical education at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. He also serves as dean of the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation and has been a member of the Foundation board since 2005. Redmond said he hopes to “continue the outstanding work the Foundation has accomplished since its inception… the work of the Foundation over the years has played a large role in the growth and remarkable advancement of athletic training, and this needs to continue.”

The Foundation Board’s new treasurer will be Clint Thompson, PhD, ATC, CSCS, who has served on the Foundation Board since 2000 – most recently as vice president. “I’m very familiar with the workings of the Foundation Board [through my experience], and I enjoy the whole thing,” Thompson said. “Our main focus will be working on a capital campaign to solicit funds so we can endow scholarships and research grants.”

In addition to these three new officers, seven brand-new board members came to the table in June.

Michelle Boyd, MS, ATC, head athletic trainer at Truman State University, has been elected to serve as a board member until 2011. “I hope to encourage the membership to take advantage of all the Foundation has to offer,” Boyd said. “I would like to see every NATA member find a way to contribute to the Foundation at some level.”

Also joining the board will be Sue Guyer, DPE, ATC, LAT, CSCS, an assistant athletic training professor and clinical coordinator at Springfield College who is “truly honored to be on the board.” Guyer said she hopes to assist the board with continued efforts to ensure funds for scholarship and scholarly work. “I believe education drives the profession and we need the best and the brightest to continue moving athletic training forward.”

Robert Kersey, PhD, ATC, CSCS, the athletic training program director at California State University at Fullerton, will also serve as a board member until 2011. Kersey wants to “learn more completely the various roles of the Foundation and its board members and then do my best to help them achieve their goals.”

Joining the class of 2011 – as the new chair of the Foundation Research Committee – is

Darin Padua, PhD, ATC, an associate professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “I hope to facilitate funding opportunities for new investigators in athletic training that stimulate research focused on validating and improving the clinical practice of certified athletic trainers,” Padua said.

Dave Perrin, PhD, ATC, has been elected to the board. Perrin is the provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. “The long-term viability of our professional organization will be enhanced with a strong Research and Education Foundation,” he said. “I hope to apply the skills I have acquired in development as a university dean and provost to the work of the Foundation to increase the number and variety of endowed funds in support of our certified and student members.”

Jeff Ryan, MPT, is another newly elected board member. Currently serving as chief operating officer, Physician Practice Plan at Hahnemann University Hospital, Ryan is excited to serve the Foundation. “As a hospital administrator I hope to bring a little different perspective to the board,” he said.

Cindy Trowbridge, PhD, ATC, CSCS, rounds out the Foundation board class of 2011.  Trowbridge is an assistant professor and clinical coordinator for the athletic training program at the University of Texas at Arlington. Trowbridge has several goals for her term on the Board, but her first priority is to “increase the awareness of the NATAREF’s programs by connecting with the membership at conferences and through district and state newsletters.”
