It’s a
brand-new
lineup
for the
NATA
Research
and
Education
Foundation
after
electing
several
new
board
members
and
moving a
few
current
members
to
different
positions.
At the
Annual
Meeting
in June,
seven
new
Foundation
board
members
took
office,
including
a new
president,
vice
president
and
treasurer.
Mark
Hoffman,
PhD, ATC,
has been
elected
president
of the
Foundation
board
until
2010.Hoffman
is an
associate
professor
of
exercise
and
sports
science
at
Oregon
State
University
and has
served
on the
Foundation
board
since
2004.
“My
number
one
priority
as
president
is to
make
sure we
have a
Board of
Directors
focused
on the
long
term
health
of the
Foundation
so we
can
continue
to
support
development
of the
profession
through
the
numerous
programs
we
offer,”
Hoffman
said.
Charlie
Redmond,
MS, MEd,
ATC, PT,
was
chosen
to fill
the role
of
Foundation
vice
president
until
2010.
Redmond
is an
associate
professor
of
physical
education
at
Springfield
College
in
Springfield,
Mass. He
also
serves
as dean
of the
School
of
Health,
Physical
Education
and
Recreation
and has
been a
member
of the
Foundation
board
since
2005.
Redmond
said he
hopes to
“continue
the
outstanding
work the
Foundation
has
accomplished
since
its
inception…
the work
of the
Foundation
over the
years
has
played a
large
role in
the
growth
and
remarkable
advancement
of
athletic
training,
and this
needs to
continue.”
The
Foundation
Board’s
new
treasurer
will be
Clint
Thompson,
PhD, ATC,
CSCS,
who has
served
on the
Foundation
Board
since
2000 –
most
recently
as vice
president.
“I’m
very
familiar
with the
workings
of the
Foundation
Board
[through
my
experience],
and I
enjoy
the
whole
thing,”
Thompson
said.
“Our
main
focus
will be
working
on a
capital
campaign
to
solicit
funds so
we can
endow
scholarships
and
research
grants.”
In
addition
to these
three
new
officers,
seven
brand-new
board
members
came to
the
table in
June.
Michelle
Boyd,
MS, ATC,
head
athletic
trainer
at
Truman
State
University,
has been
elected
to serve
as a
board
member
until
2011. “I
hope to
encourage
the
membership
to take
advantage
of all
the
Foundation
has to
offer,”
Boyd
said. “I
would
like to
see
every
NATA
member
find a
way to
contribute
to the
Foundation
at some
level.”
Also
joining
the
board
will be
Sue
Guyer,
DPE, ATC,
LAT,
CSCS, an
assistant
athletic
training
professor
and
clinical
coordinator
at
Springfield
College
who is
“truly
honored
to be on
the
board.”
Guyer
said she
hopes to
assist
the
board
with
continued
efforts
to
ensure
funds
for
scholarship
and
scholarly
work. “I
believe
education
drives
the
profession
and we
need the
best and
the
brightest
to
continue
moving
athletic
training
forward.”
Robert
Kersey,
PhD, ATC,
CSCS,
the
athletic
training
program
director
at
California
State
University
at
Fullerton,
will
also
serve as
a board
member
until
2011.
Kersey
wants to
“learn
more
completely
the
various
roles of
the
Foundation
and its
board
members
and then
do my
best to
help
them
achieve
their
goals.”
Joining
the
class of
2011 –
as the
new
chair of
the
Foundation
Research
Committee
– is
Darin
Padua,
PhD, ATC,
an
associate
professor
in the
Department
of
Exercise
and
Sport
Science
at the
University
of North
Carolina
at
Chapel
Hill. “I
hope to
facilitate
funding
opportunities
for new
investigators
in
athletic
training
that
stimulate
research
focused
on
validating
and
improving
the
clinical
practice
of
certified
athletic
trainers,”
Padua
said.
Dave
Perrin,
PhD, ATC,
has been
elected
to the
board.
Perrin
is the
provost
and vice
chancellor
for
Academic
Affairs
at the
University
of North
Carolina
at
Greensboro.
“The
long-term
viability
of our
professional
organization
will be
enhanced
with a
strong
Research
and
Education
Foundation,”
he said.
“I hope
to apply
the
skills I
have
acquired
in
development
as a
university
dean and
provost
to the
work of
the
Foundation
to
increase
the
number
and
variety
of
endowed
funds in
support
of our
certified
and
student
members.”
Jeff
Ryan,
MPT, is
another
newly
elected
board
member.
Currently
serving
as chief
operating
officer,
Physician
Practice
Plan at
Hahnemann
University
Hospital,
Ryan is
excited
to serve
the
Foundation.
“As a
hospital
administrator
I hope
to bring
a little
different
perspective
to the
board,”
he said.
Cindy
Trowbridge,
PhD, ATC,
CSCS,
rounds
out the
Foundation
board
class of
2011.
Trowbridge
is an
assistant
professor
and
clinical
coordinator
for the
athletic
training
program
at the
University
of Texas
at
Arlington.
Trowbridge
has
several
goals
for her
term on
the
Board,
but her
first
priority
is to
“increase
the
awareness
of the
NATAREF’s
programs
by
connecting
with the
membership
at
conferences
and
through
district
and
state
newsletters.”
