Scholarship Applications Available soon

2009 Scholarship applications will be available on the NATA Foundation website by October 15, 2008.  There are three categories: Entry Level, Masters and Doctoral.  Click HERE for further information on scholarships.  Application packets must be fully submitted online by Friday, February 6, 2009, to be considered.

Approximately seventy $2,300 scholarships will be offered.  The basic criteria includes NATA membership (since February 6, 2008 for masters and doctoral and application for membership not later than November 1, 2008 for entry level students), 3.2 GPA on all course work and intent to make athletic training their primary means of livelihood.  Specific eligibility requirements vary with each scholarship and are provided with the application instructions.


The Scholarship Committee is composed of a member from each NATA district as well as representatives from professional baseball, basketball, football and hockey.

The NATA Foundation Scholarship Program has been very successful to date and has awarded $1,903,500 from 1990 through 2008.  With the seventy plus scholarships to be awarded at the 2009 NATA Annual Meeting in San Antonio, we will surpass the 2 million mark.

Annual Fund Progress

The Foundation's 2008 Building Your Foundation Annual Fund Drive is progressing nicely and there is still time for you to add to its success.  Contributions by December 31, 2008 help your district in the annual NATA Foundation District Competition recognition.

Below is a recent status report on the District Competition.  The winner will be determined by the district that reaches the overall highest percentage of its goal from all sources (members, state and district organizations).

Foundation Investor Report for 2007

We are very appreciative of the investment that you as individual members have made in the Foundation and wanted to provide the highlights below of the NATA Foundation's accomplishments for 2007.  The Foundation relies heavily upon charitable giving and voluntary support to sustain all of its programs and activities, which are geared to supporting and advancing the athletic training profession through research and education.  Only a small portion of NATA District membership dues approved by some individual districts directly supports the Foundation.

Research Programs
  • 13 Grants were awarded totaling over $197,000

  • Approximately 200 Free Communications Presentations/Posters were presented at the NATA Annual Meeting in Anaheim

  • 10 Foundation grant recipients presented their findings to the NATA membership in Anaheim

  • Abstracts of original research were published in the summer supplement to the Journal of Athletic Training

  • An original research supplement to the Journal of Athletic Training was made available to NATA members

  • Grant Information Summaries, published from funded research projects, were made available to NATA members through the Foundation website and at National and District Meetings

  • The New Investigator Award presented in honor of Freddie H. Fu, MD

  • Doctoral Dissertation Award presented in honor of David H. Perrin, PhD, ATC

  • Post Doctoral Research Grant  continued funding

Education Programs

  • $154,000 awarded through Foundation Scholarship Program (77 Scholarships)

  • Distribution of Sudden Death Summit position paper

  • Presentation of Lecture Exchange Program with the AMSSM, AOSSM and ACSM

  • Educational research/program grants

GRANT INFORMATION SUMMARY
The Accuracy of a Screening Echocardiogram in Detecting Idiopathic Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy During the Athletic Pre-Participation Physical

PRACTICAL SIGNIFICANCE
If a relatively low-cost method can be employed to screen athletes for the detection of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, then the sudden death of many individuals could potentially be avoided.

Recent Foundation Board Actions

The Foundation Board held a conference call on August 26, 2008.  Below are some highlights of the actions taken on this date:
  1. Approved the minutes for the 6/16/08 meeting as presented.
  2. Approved the minutes for the 7/10/08 conference call as presented.
  3. Approved naming the Foundation's planned giving society The Shoebox Society for Planned Giving.
  4. Authorized an unbudgeted expenditure of up to $2,000 for an Annual Fund Solicitation.

The next Foundation Board Conference Call is scheduled for Friday, October 17, 2008 at 10:30 A.M. (Central Time).
