Dr. Louis Gerena is originally from Coral Springs, Florida, and is beginning his first year on the University of West Alabama Sports Medicine Staff.  He attended the University of Central Florida for his undergraduate degree and then the Florida State University College of Medicine for his medical degree. He completed his family medicine residency at MUSC in Charleston, South Carolina.  He is currently training as a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellow at the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) in Birmingham under the leadership of Dr. Jose Ortega.  In addition to his professional pursuits, Dr. Gerena enjoys traveling the world, reading historical nonfiction, and following football and boxing.
